Alaska Driver License Requirements at-a-glance:

  • Unsupervised driving rules 16 and 17-year-old drivers are initially issued a provisional driver's license. A provisional license prohibits you from driving unsupervised between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am unless you are driving to or from your job (on the most direct route). Otherwise, you must be accompanied by a licensed, 21-year-old driver during these hours.
  • Passenger rules With a provisional license, it is okay to carry passengers so long as one of the passengers is at least 21 and has been a licensed driver for at least one (1) year. This licensed driver must be seated in the front passenger seat.
  • Other While driving with an instruction permit, the supervising adult must have had a license for one year and be at least 21 years of age or older.
