Mount Vernon New York Online Driver Education and Mount Vernon New York Licensing Procedures
So you've taken your first step towards becoming a new driver in Mount Vernon New York? Congratulations!
As you probably already know, driving is a valuable skill, but can also be extremely dangerous. Therefore, to help new teen drivers develop safe driving habits during their first few years behind the wheel, the State of Mount Vernon New York has implemented a graduated driver license program for Mount Vernon New York drivers who are under the age of 18.
We’ve summarized a few things you’ll need to know as you begin the process of becoming a licensed driver in Mount Vernon New York.
Mount Vernon New York Instruction Permit (aka--Learners Permit)
You can apply for a Mount Vernon New York instruction permit when you turn 16. When you go down to the driver's license office, please take the following items:

With a provisional license, some restrictions will still apply:
- Whenever you drive, you must be accompanied by a licensed adult driver who's at least 21 years old who actively supervises your driving from the front passenger seat.
- All passengers (including you) must wear seatbelts.
- In Mount Vernon New York City, you may not drive on any street within a park
- You may not drive across any bridge or in any tunnel that's under the jurisdiction of the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority
- You may not drive on the Cross Country, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, or Taconic State parkways in Westchester County
After 12 months, if you have kept a clean driving record, you may apply for full driver's license if you pass the road test. With a full license, the above restrictions are removed.
Mount Vernon New York Auto Insurance & Financial Responsibility Laws
The State of Mount Vernon New York requires that you maintain a certain amount of liability coverage on any vehicle you drive. The minimum required coverage is as follows:
- $25,000--personal injury (1 person)
- $50,000--personal injury (2 or more persons)
- $50,000--death (1 person)
- $100,000--death (2 or more persons)
- $10,000--property damage
Driving while uninsured is a crime! If you drive without the required insurance coverage, you will face having your license suspended, plus a hefty fine.
Mount Vernon New York Drunk Driving Laws
Drinking while under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Mount Vernon New York, and the law is strictly enforced.
Upon your FIRST Mount Vernon New York DUI conviction, you will face the following penalties:
- 1 year in Jail
- 6-month (minimum) license suspension
- Fine ranging from $500 to $1,000
- Mandatory surcharge
- Mandatory alcohol screening and/or evaluation
